Synopsis Educational data have been a useful source for planning, management, monitoring the progress and formulation of policies of education in the country. Different organisations are collecting such data from the field with different dates of reference. The user feels difficulty in getting a small piece of information, as he has to scan a number of publications. In view of this, the need of publishing data of one aspect together in one volume collected by different organisations was felt by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Accordingly, the work of preparing the "Compendium of Educational Statistics-School Education" was assigned to the National Council of Educational Research and Training. In the present volume data on School Education published from time to time by different national level organisations like Ministry of Human Resource Development, National Council of Educational Research and Training, National Sample Survey Organisation, Registrar General of India, Central Statistical Organisation, Planning Commission etc., have been taken into account and consolidated for meaningful presentation. The major themes covered are educational administration, structure and systems in the country; educational institutions; educational facilities in rural areas; physical facilities in schools; enrolment and teachers in schools; teacher training institutions; expenditure on school education; results of high and higher secondary examinations; and projections of some educational statistics viz. population, enrolment and requirement of teachers. The data on important themes like institutions, enrolment, teachers, physical facilities in schools, and expenditure on school education etc., are being presented since independence. The examination results are being presented for last one decade only. As such the document provides scenario of development of school education in the country.
