Crisis of Environment and Climate Change
This booklet is an enlarged version of D.B. Thengadi Memorial Lecture, 2007 which author delivered at the Constitution Club, New Delhi. Enlargement has been necessitated by the vastness of the subject which essentially concerns the soul and sinews of modern civilisation. The booklet has been divided into seven chapters. In Chapter I, depth and dimensions of the crisis of environment and climate change have been briefly brought out. Chapter II is devoted to the historical backdrop. It indicates the thinking that has so far governed the broad approach to meet the crisis and also the measures that have been taken in this regard. In chapter III, inadequacies of these measures have been exposed and prevailing conditions analysed separately with regard to each of the key elements having bearing on environment and climate change. Chapter IV unfolds a blueprint for transformation of systems and sub-systems and Chapter V makes out a case for a fundamental reorientation of current attitudes and life-styles. In chapter VI, relevance of the ancient Indian wisdom to the resolution of the crisis is discussed. Chapter VII reflects upon the shape that the future may assume.
