Vyakarana Across the Ages
The volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the 15th World Sanskrit conference held in New Delhi in January 2012. The contributions take up the currents in European traditions of Sanskrit grammars, referring to early works by Christian missionaries to compilation of modern Sanskrit grammars. One of the ancient writers in focus is the noted grammarian Panini. Scholars discuss theoretical issues concerning the interpretation and application of Paninian sutras, taking up questions relating to particles (nipata) and preverbs (upasarga). They deal with criticism of Paninian views by Mimamsakas of Prabhakara Naiyayikas and other topics like the relations between terms and meanings as expounded by Bhartrhari. Modern Sanskrit literature is not ignored, the papers including a discussion of usage in the prose work of Ambika Dutt Vyas, Shivarajavijaya.
