This collection of 20 articles, published over the years in the Sociological Bulletin, attempts to present a sociological analysis of rural society in India. Taking a close look at the social change in rural India, it seeks to examine the rural-urban relations, industrialization and urbanization of rural areas, modernization and urban-rural gap, folk-urban continuum and rural family patterns.
Presenting profiles of some villages of Rajasthan, Punjab and South India, it provides critical assessment of social stratification in rural India, bhadralok and chhotolok in rural areas of West Bengal, caste system in contemporary rural Bihar, rural power elite and institutional change in Gujarat villages.
