About the authors

V.K. Natraj

Prof. V.K. Natraj, presently Director, Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai, is a graduate of the universities of Mysore and Oxford. He was professor of Development Studies and Director, Institute of Development Studies, University of Mysore. He is on the Management Committee of the Development Research Centre for the Future State at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, UK.

A. Vaidyanathan

A. Vaidyanathan is currently Emeritus Professor at the Madras Institute of Development Studies (Chennai, India) and is a member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council. He was educated in Madras, and did his post graduation in the USA. After obtaining a Ph.D from Cornell University, he worked for 6 years (1956-62) as economist in the National Council of Applied Economic Research, New Delhi. Currently he is also Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Social Studies Trust, New Delhi.
