This compendium of 22 papers, presented at a national seminar, organized by the Department of Rural Studies, V.N.S.G. University, Surat, attempts to examine the various aspects of tribal development in India during the post-economic reforms, with special reference to Gujarat. Taking a close look at the status of tribal development in the country, it discusses at length the Gujarat model of tribal development, seasonal migration and sustainable rural livelihoods, and degradation of land resources, technology gap and tribal farmers’ rationale.
Making an impact assessment of watershed programmes in South Gujarat, it also deals with the development-induced displacement among the tribals, irrigation and tribal poverty, resettlement and rehabilitation of tribals, the alternative models of poverty alleviation, decentralized governance, and empowerment of tribal women through Grameen Vikas Kendra with micro-finance approach.
