The role by spiritual leasership in the whole realms of Islam and Muslim is verily tremendous, due to the mammoth important Islam attaches to the spiritual side of religion but without the required share of material aspect. The same is applicable to the Mappila Muslims of Kerala. Throughout the history, the community stood forth not only as an enlightened calss but strove for the well being of the secular society as a whole.

This book attempts to analyse the role of spiritual leadership in the anti-colonial struggle in Kerala, with special reference to Qazi Muhammad Kalikuti. Tracing the origin of Mappila Muslim community and its characteristic features, it examines the contributions of the Qazi family of Calicut towards the freedom movement, with special focus on the literary, spiritual and reformatory contributions of Qazi Muhammad Kalikuti. It also makes an in-depth study of the Qazi's two important poetic works in Arabic and Arabic-Malayalam-Fathul Mubin and Muhyiddin Mala-which exterted great influence on the Mappila life and its anti colonial movements.
