Kalanjar Fort: History, Art & Architecture
The book examines the history and art and architecture of Kalanjar Fort. Based on field surveys and with reference to written sources including the district gazetteer of Banda, it begins with the natural setting of the Kalanjar Fort and history of the region around district Banda, Uttar Pradesh. It discusses the statistical data of the architectural edifices, the distribution of structures in the fort and their salient features, and the sculptural art which includes figures/images on rocks and panels including those of Shiva linga, Nandi, devotees and sadhus, Vishnu, Chamunda, different Bhairava forms, a Naga couple and king’s procession. It throws light on the manner of exploitation of the natural surface of the hill to construct the fort, elements of Islamic architecture relating to medieval times, and structures built in the British period. There are a number of photographs of the fort that support the textual description.
