Maritime Heritage of Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands
The book studies the maritime heritage of Lakshadweep and Minicoy islands. They are all small coral islands that lie about 250 – 300 kms west of the coast of Kerala. Only ten of the islands are peopled since the mediaeval ages. Because of their insularity, the islands retain most of their age – old traditions and boat forms. The islands are surrounded by shallow lagoons and reef edges. They are covered extensively by palm trees. The southernmost island of Minicoy is separated from other islands. The boats are small and of limited draught because of the shallow depths of the lagoons.
The people of these islands are good seamen and have links with both the coasts of India. Their heritage is predominantly local, though some are borrowed from the mainland. This managed to keep the Siddi and the European trading powers at bay for about 150 years.
