Indian Immigrants in United Kingdom: A Socio-Economic Analysis
Synopsis
This book presents a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the social and economic characteristics of Indian migrants settled in United Kingdom. The specific issues dealt with are causes of emigration, total amount of remittances sent home by the migrants and their mode of utilisation in India, assimilation problem, retainment of Indian cultural values by these migrants in U.K., the views of their children regarding love/arranged marriage etc. The study shows that a vast majority of migrants sent a fairly large amount of money during 1960's and 1970's for purhcasing land/building houses/making agricultural improvements. Since majority of migrants are not fully aware of various schemes including IBD's scheme introduced by the Indian government to attract investment from these migrants in India, there is a desperate need for giving intensive publicity for these attractive schemes. It is also revealed in the survey that since the British born immigrants children have been experiencing discrimination while seeking jobs and promotions, the British government should take concrete steps to stop this happening. The book consists of five chapters out of which two are devoted to theoretical and methodological aspects. Empirical work is presented in the remaining chapters using tabular analysis. The study is expected to be very much useful for students, researchers, economists, planners as well as policy makers as it provides a deep insight into the problems of Indian migrants settled in U.K.
