Pictorial Handbook on Fishes of North East India
From the foreword: Fishes are cold blooded backboned animals and are the most ancient and numerous of vertebrates. Diversified fish fauna of North Eastern region was worked out by several authors on regional basis resulting in a good number of publications. But no efforts were made earlier to get an overall picture of the fish fauna of North Eastern Region as a whole. Under the Conservation of Biodiversity Programme, the Government of India is taking biological sciences to the masses. In the light of above, the Zoological Survey of India is bringing out publications to popularize science.
The Pictorial Handbook series on various groups of faunal elements published by the department are the outcome of this scheme and the present work is also a part of that. The authors have taken care to depict as many pictures as possible of the fishes of North East India. The book contains 451 species of fishes so far recorded and reported from North East India (except Sikkim which is not under the jurisdiction of the station). Under each species, diagnostic characters, distribution and status (IUCN, 2013) have been incorporated.
