Synopsis The present volume may not be taken merely as a collection of papers on the Painted Grey Ware industry, but more as a reference-book for the future researchers on the problem. Each paper raises some searching question of poses certain problem or throws sufficent light on recent findings. Almost all leading archaeologists of the country engaged in those days with the P.G.W. issues, attended the seminar, presented their papers and participated in the discussions. Some of these scholars including Prof. S. Nurul Hasan, Prof. H.D. Sankalia, Prof. G.R. Sharma, Prof. K.A. Chowdhury, Shri. A. Ghosh, Dr. Satya Prakash Srivastava and Shri M.D. Khare, are no more in our midst. Therefore, this volume of proceedings is a scholarly tribute to these doyen of archaeologists. It is gratifying that the three distinguished archaeologists Prof. B.B. Lal, who associated the P.G.W. for the first time, with the Aryans, A. Ghosh, the former Director General of Archaeological Survey of India, and Prof. H.D. Sankalia, Director, Deccan College, Pune were present at one place, most probably for the first time, along with the other scholars. They made valuable contributions through their papers and discussions.
