Rama Janamabhoomi: Professor B.R. Grovers's Analysis of Revenue Records and Historical Facts
Ever since the demolition of the `Baburi Masjid` at Ayodhya on December 6, 1992, we have been swamped with contentious literature on this topic by numerous scholars offering varied perspectives, resulting in division amongst politicians, historians and religious groups. The material presented in this book is based on critical historical analysis and a scientific study of the land rights of Janmasthan versus `Baburi Masjid` and dispels several misleading theories on the said subject. Professor B.R. Grover examined original land revenue documents, maps of Ayodhya, recorded eyewitness accounts of travels to Ayodhya as well as Babur`s Memoirs and other documents and manuscripts available at various libraries in Persian, Arabic, Chaghatay-Turkish, Urdu, Sanskrit, Punjabi and English to arrive at the conclusions presented in this book. Among other things, Professor Grover set the record straight regarding the location of the ancient city of Ayodhya, the exact location of Janamasthan, and the ownership-occupation of the land. He established that the area on which the structure of the `Baburi Masjid` stood is a part of the Janamasthan and that despite the construction of the `mosque` on the Janamasthan site, the Hindus never surrendered their claims of worship at this site all through the centuries. One significant point clarified by Professor Grover is view held by some that the 19th century works of English and Muslim writers on the history of Awadh were biased and based upon the British `Divide-and-Rule` policy. Upon an examination of the revenue documents and judicial records, Professor Grover iterated that the tussle between the Hindus and the Muslims over Janamasthan vs. `Baburi Masjid` existed during the Nawabi period and it was not a creation of the British `Divide-and-Rule` policy. Another significant theory of the All India Baburi Masjid Committee was proved as invalid by him through an examination of Shah Jahan`s original Farman of 3rd July, 1648 that a Muslim.
